Vacations in Abkhazia are always associated with choosing the best places to stay. It doesn’t matter whether you choose Gagra, New Athos, or Pitsunda for your summer vacation. All tourists want a hotel on the beach (ideally, on the first line), a clean beach, a courtyard with a swimming pool, and the best views of the Black Sea or the breathtaking landscapes of the Caucasus. However, it is possible to find all of these things.
In this article, we will create our own rating of the best hotels in Abkhazia, where a family with children, a group of young people, or an adult couple can have a cheap vacation. We took into account the location, the chance of an all-inclusive system and other key criteria.
Garden Resort Gagra 4*, Gagra
Opens the rating Abkhazian superstar – Garden Resort Gagra, which occupied a huge park area on the way from Tsandripsh to Old Gagra. 117 rooms from standard to luxury suites with sea views work all year round, regardless of the season. The descent to the private beach is organized by an elevator, no dangerous transitions. There are many sports grounds on the territory, and there is even a light and music fountain.
The pride of Garden Resort Gagra is its spacious spa center, which has its own brand, Thalasso Bretagne. Separate rooms for men and women, several types of massages and anti-aging treatments, and all this without leaving the hotel. There is an educational club and a safe heated swimming pool for children from 4 to 12 years old, and a playground opposite.
Cote d’Azur (formerly Tsandripsh), Tsandripsh
Once deserving hundreds of honorary awards, the resort village of Tsandripsh has now received a huge modern hotel called the Cote d’Azur. The 2023 residential building with 240 rooms meets all the requirements of comfort. Its convenient location, just steps away from the beach, offers a unique southern atmosphere.
The Côte d’Azur is a popular destination for young people and families with young children. The hotel offers a minimalist design with simple rooms and a shared dining area that resembles a student cafeteria, but with designer furniture. There are two spacious swimming pools of different depths in the courtyard, one of which is equipped with a water heating system. For young guests, there is a mini-club and exciting children’s animation.
Europe, New Gagra
The Europe Hotel in the New Gagra area is a sight to behold. Built in the style of a stepped ziggurat, it resembles the best Turkish chain hotels. Currently, the hotel has 450 rooms in two buildings, but reviews hint at future expansions. This is one of the few hotels with a full All Inclusive package of food and services.
Europe is located near one of the resort’s iconic places, the Dolphin Beach, which is popular among tourist bloggers. The Gagra market is within walking distance, so you won’t run out of food. The heated swimming pool on site is also an entertainment area with animators and other activities.
Litfond Pension, Pitsunda
If you’re looking for a good hotel in Abkhazia with children, it’s worth considering classic accommodation. The Litfond Pension in Pitsunda offers almost 300 rooms in a single multi-storey building and two smaller buildings, making it convenient for families to stay together. Despite its advanced age (it was built in 1951), the building is regularly renovated, and after the recent renovation, it looks modern. In the summer, there are exciting show programs and lively beach discos. Professional animators take care of the children.
The only nuance of living here is the large number of tourists who come not only to swim in the sea, but also to improve their health. After all, Litfond is primarily a full-cycle sanatorium. They treat everything from the liver to the blood vessels in the brain. By the way, the access to the beach is very well designed — the coast is sandy and pebbly, and there is all the resort infrastructure. There is a separate safe swimming area for children.
Samshitovaya Roshcha Sanatorium, Pitsunda
Unlike other Abkhazian health resorts built in the late Soviet era, Samshitovaya Roshcha is a relatively new sanatorium that was built in 1990. Now it is one of the best places for ecotourism in the whole republic, because the residential buildings are adjacent to the park on the seashore, giving priceless pure air.
The other side of the travel packages is also obvious — it is a broad-profile sanatorium-resort format. In the boxwood grove go for detox therapy, rehabilitation after diseases of the respiratory tract, etc. There are separate beauty directions, male health, but most importantly — the format of treatment “mother and child”, rare for Abkhazia.
Pearl Hotel Standard, Gudauta
Gudautskaya Pearl is one of the most affordable accommodation options if you are looking for a small hotel of a family format a couple of steps from the beach. Externally, it resembles a low-rise residential building with wide balconies. Inside, it has a classic three-room interior with no frills, but everything necessary for guests.
The Pearl’s calling card is that there are only a couple of hotels nearby, and just across the street is the Guda and Uta Park, a popular walking spot. Although there is no official beach, a well-maintained promenade leads to it. The coastline is well-maintained, with several rows of sunshades, a volleyball court, and bike, scooter, and sape rentals available throughout the summer.
National, Gudauta
The National Hotel in Gudauta breaks all the stereotypes about “average” Abkhazian accommodation. In fact, this is a rare example of a boutique hotel in the republic, with 24 rooms that are decorated with a hint of high-tech. Yes, you’ll have to walk to the coast, but you’ll be guaranteed comfort and a peaceful night without a disco under your window.
The rooms in the National Hotel are like a studio apartment with a garden view. The decor is in muted gray tones, and there is plenty of furniture, including a double bed and an armchairthey will be for sure. A table with a kettle is set up against the far wall. Bathroom with modern European plumbing. If desired, you can choose separate beds.
Sunny Beach, Sukhum
Sukhumi Sunny Beach is, if not the best hotel in Abkhazia, then at least it can be considered one of the successful renovations. Now it is included in the top budget hotels of the republic. The residential building with almost 200 rooms is located on Akirtava Street in a green area. Within walking distance are the ruins of Bagrat’s Castle, a mandatory stop for sightseeing tours of Sukhum.
The beach from the Sunny Beach Hotel is 150 meters away, it is a classic Abkhazian coast made of small pebbles. The neighboring hotels are responsible for the infrastructure, so only the entrance is free, everything else is for the tariff indicated on the price tag. A cozy boxwood alley with a whole sculptural park with graceful fountains leads here — a favorite place for atmospheric photos. There is no separate children’s area, please note before booking.
Azanta, New Athos
Azanta in New Athos is one of the modern mini—hotels suitable for tourists with children or long business trips. It opened in 2023, but has already gained fame among the guests. There are 16 rooms in a two—minute walk from the central beach, but the main thing is that the territory is adjacent to the dam of Swan Lake.
Interestingly, during the Soviet era, the main building of the Azanta Hotel was a typical Georgian restaurant “Adjara”, which was awaiting a complete renovation. Now there are rooms inside with the declared deluxe category, with balconies and daily cleaning. There is stable Wi-Fi throughout, including the lobby and the promenade on the shores of the lake.
Villa Sova, New Athos
Villa Sova Guest House, which appeared on the New Athos coast in 2015, has become one of the most original hotels in Abkhazia. The colorful building, which looks like a fairy-tale house, is located within walking distance from the beach, and its balconies offer breathtaking views of the Black Sea and the surroundings of the resort.
Villa Owl tries to satisfy any tourist’s request. You can stay here alone (there are rooms with single beds), as a family, and luxury lovers get art suites with spectacular interior design and references to Italian retro. Each of these rooms has an individual design.
Boutique Hotel Apsuana Rose 4*, Gagra
A rather rare boutique format is offered by Boutique Hotel Apsuana Rose, a strong “foursome” in the lively Gagra district opposite the city stadium. 30 rooms, “packed” in a stylish five-story building, are worthy of photo shoots, or even filming a movie. Everyone has their own character in the style of an industrial loft.
On the ground floor there is a restaurant with a full-time chef (breakfast and dinner are included in the accommodation), and the last fifth is given over to a SPA center. For women, there is a cosmetologist’s office, a hammam, an aromatherapy room, a yoga room and a Chinese Qigong gym all summer long. The children are entertained by a staff of animators.
Rest Home Named After Chelyuskintsev, Gagra
Hotels in Gagra, Abkhazia, include famous holiday homes that evoke the fondest memories and are associated with the atmosphere of a real Soviet resort. Chelyuskintsy is a pleasant exception to the rule, because it was built only in 2017. It became one of the first successful hotels in Novaya Gagra, revealing unexpected facets of the resort. It’s cozy and modern inside, and surrounded by a designer landscaped park.
Holiday Home Named After Chelyuskintsev boasts a beach 20 meters from the residential buildings — the Gagra pebble classic with rows of sun loungers. There are only 167 rooms in the three buildings, and there won’t be any unnecessary noise even in the middle of summer. The guests in the reviews mention the food — it is served three times a day with the inclusion of a buffet. It is a good choice for those who do not plan to travel a lot around the republic.
Máre Athos, New Athos
The brand—new Mare Hotel in New Athos, which opened in 2024, is actually a boutique hotel with 35 rooms in a modern European style. It is located on a tasty piece of the resort coast, in the area of Swan Lake. From here, the sea beach is only 100 meters away, all the sights are within walking distance.
Inside the Mare, there are cozy rooms in a restrained pastel design, with an emphasis on natural finishing materials. The restraint of design is the hallmark of a place that has managed to earn a lot of flattering reviews. In the park opposite, an open—air disco is held every evening – all ages are submissive to dancing.
Amra Park-Hotel & Spa 5*, Gagra
The buildings of the reconstructed sanatorium named after the XVII Party Congress have now become a real palace. Inside there are 239 rooms, decorated with references to the luxurious Stalinist Empire style, but in a modern tourist way.
The newest building, including an indoor pool under a futuristic design, is responsible for the spa services of the Amra Park-Hotel a polygonal dome made of glass. For beautiful ladies, there is a catalog that includes massages, aromatherapy and a cycle of rejuvenating treatments. There is a hammam and a Finnish sauna in the thermal area. Since 2018, an authorized sanatorium-type medical center has been operating at the hotel.
Nart Park Spa Hotel 4*, Gagra
Completes the selection of Nart Park Spa Hotel — Amra’s closest neighbor and a real decoration of the resort area of Staraya Gagra. There are 250 guest rooms in five buildings with designs inspired by Abkhazian folk art. For children there is a playroom with animators and a pastry shop.
It operates at the Nart Park Spa Hotel and has its own SPA complex, whose procedures are dedicated to rejuvenation of the body and beauty. There are hydrotherapy rooms, a phyto tank, a separate pool at the exit of their hammam and a cosmetologist’s office. Licensed instructors, including yoga and aerobics trainers, are assigned to the fitness center.
